  2. PROJECT 2: Gavi Immunization Demand Generation – Eastern Uganda

Project Title: Strengthening Community Demand for Routine Immunization
Implementing Partner: Hope After Rape (HAR)
Funding Partner: Gavi – Full Portfolio Planning (through PATH)
Target Districts: Mbale City, Kween, Serere
Implementation Period: June – November 2025

    Project Tagline:
Reaching every child through community-led action and inclusive health engagement.

    Overview:
This initiative strengthens community demand for immunization in hard-to-reach and underserved areas of Eastern Uganda, focusing on zero-dose and under-immunized children. Working closely with local government, cultural and religious leaders, and CBOs, the project tackles behavioral and social barriers that prevent families from accessing vaccines.

Using Human-Centered Design (HCD) and Behavioral and Social Drivers (BeSD) insights, it promotes gender-responsive and culturally sensitive strategies—such as male engagement, peer dialogues, and radio talk shows—to build trust in immunization services.

    Key Focus Areas:

    • Community Mobilization: LCs, VHTs, and CBOs linking zero-dose households to service points.
    • Capacity Building: Training 90 district stakeholders and community leaders on BeSD and immunization promotion.
    • Media & Advocacy: Radio campaigns, dialogues, and community engagements to dispel myths.
    • Gender & Inclusion: Addressing gender barriers with influential leaders and inclusive community platforms.
    • Monitoring & Data Use: Profiling households and using digital tools for improved planning.

    Expected Impact:

    • Improved immunization coverage for zero-dose and under-immunized children.
    • Stronger collaboration between communities and health systems.
    • Greater gender equity and social inclusion in health access.
    • Enhanced community ownership and sustainability of immunization programs.
